Shooting the Enemy

Much thanx to the Center for Visual Culture and African Studies Program whom brought Harry Allen (aka Director of Enemy Relations, aka Media Assassin) to Campus yesterday. He spoke on his photography work and history with the Spectrum City mobile d.j. crew.

Photo of Hank Shockley from Harry Allen’s archive (Hank on MyAssFace)

Harry really didn’t need to say anything… he could have just let his photos do the talking, but he did recount some great stories:

  • “Not the tools, but what you do with them.” When showing a photo of Chuck D rockin the Realistic™ NOVA 40 headphones, a cassette deck and 1/4″ reel to reel!
  • His first assignment for Spectrum: sneaking into Purple Rain and shooting stills of the screen for backdrops at their next dj event.
  • Botching a Madonna shoot at the Ritz.
  • “Grand Master Flash, Cool DJ Herc and Afrika Bambaataa were the three legs of hip-hop.”

Harry will be joined by Chuck D and Hank and Keith Shocklee on 4/1/2010 at the University of Iowa.
